What a product code means
As of September 26, 2026, FDA said a National Drug Code, a product identification number, did not mean a drug was FDA-approved.
Why this source matters
A directory entry is not the product’s approval record.
Under the rule checked September 26, 2026, registering a business that handles medicines did not mean FDA had approved it.
Putting a medicine on a government list did not mean FDA had approved that medicine either.
Neither record, by itself, gave permission to sell the medicine.
Why this source matters
A registration records a business. A listing records a medicine. The seller still needs to meet the rules that apply to the exact product.
Ask for the right record
- Are you referring to an approved finished medicine or a medicine prepared to order?
- What does the approval record call this product?
- Does the claim refer to the medicine, or only to a business on a government register?
Take the answer back to the product name. It is easier to check a specific claim than a string of badges.
